The Colorado Springs School welcomes international students in all grade levels. International applicants should apply for the grade that best aligns with their age, prior educational experience, and academic preparation at the time of enrollment.
The admission process follows CSS’s standard application requirements, with additional documentation and steps for international students. This includes proof of citizenship and, for students requiring an F-1 visa, the materials and processes necessary for CSS to support the visa application.
The Colorado Springs School thoughtfully places Upper School international students with host families who are closely connected to the School community. Many hosts are current or former CSS parents, alumni families, or faculty members. Host parents serve as caring adult advocates, helping students adjust to a new culture and language while navigating the opportunities and challenges of attending a new school.
These relationships often grow into lasting friendships. The most successful host student experiences are built on mutual respect, open communication, and meaningful participation in family life. Students are encouraged to take part in family activities, build connections with host siblings, respect household expectations, and help maintain a comfortable shared home. CSS completes background checks for all host families.
CSS also enrolls international students in grades 1–8 who reside with relatives in the Colorado Springs area. Whether students live with a host family or relatives, they are welcomed as valued members of the household. Families provide transportation and support for activities outside of school, including athletics, visual and performing arts, music, and theater.
In addition to the support of teachers, advisors, and host families, the Director of Enrollment Management helps international students transition to life at The Colorado Springs School and in the United States.
The Colorado Springs School prepares both U.S. and international students for admission to selective colleges and universities across the country. Recent CSS graduates have matriculated to institutions including Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, MIT, Tufts University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Williams College.
College counseling begins in a student’s freshman year, with guidance designed to help students explore their interests, identify potential college options, and build a thoughtful plan for the future. As students progress through Upper School, the process becomes increasingly personalized and focused. Students meet with college representatives, refine their college lists, and receive support throughout the application and decision-making process.
Through individualized guidance from the Office of College Counseling, students identify and apply to colleges and universities that align with their academic strengths, interests, and long-term goals.
Beyond The Colorado Springs School’s rigorous academic program, students have opportunities to explore Colorado Springs and experience the inspiration of our mountain setting. International students who remain at CSS for more than one semester or academic year typically return home during the two-week winter break and summer vacation. When needed, arrangements may be made for students to stay with their host families during holiday breaks.
CSS has a longstanding history of successfully working with agents to place international students. Our primary goal is to ensure that students are well-matched to the school and to their host family. The staff at CSS understand that agents are responsible to parents and other agents, in addition to students. We at CSS value positive working relationships with our agents and communicate proactively with them to ensure that parents are kept well-informed about students’ needs and progress.
