Our 2026 Dessert Theatre season continued on February 20 with performances by the 2nd and 4th grades in the Louisa Performing Arts Center. Dessert Theatre, which began more than 50 years ago at The Colorado Springs School, is more than acting. The program allows students in Kindergarten through grade 5 the freedom to explore the world through characters while solving problems and growing their communication skills and confidence. Theatre is a truly collaborative art form in which children learn to be responsible for themselves and others. This social cooperation reinforces and motivates positive behavior and builds personal integrity. The art of presenting theatre also engages whole minds through the genuine application of literacy and the integration of knowledge across the curriculum.
2nd Grade: Turtle Soup
Turtle Soup celebrates music, teamwork, and finding harmony in differences. Set in a peaceful pond, the story follows Fugue the Frog and his joyful orchestra as they prepare to perform for Queen Turtle, only to face unexpected opposition when their music disrupts royal nap time. When the Queen bans music altogether, the pond falls silent just as real danger arrives in the form of a soup-seeking human chef. Through courage and cooperation, the characters discover that music isn’t just sound; it’s a force that brings communities together and helps them stand strong in the face of fear.
4th Grade: Martha Washington’s Spy
Martha Washington’s Spy is a historical play set during the harsh winter of the American Revolutionary War. As weary soldiers stand guard against the threat of spies and desertion, a young woman named Betsy Howard risks everything by disguising herself to travel behind enemy lines. When she is mistaken for a spy, truth and loyalty are put to the test. With the wisdom and compassion of Martha Washington guiding the way, secrets are uncovered, courage is revealed, and a real enemy is exposed.
4th Grade: Boston Coffee Party
Boston Coffee Party is a historical play that brings to life the power of fairness, courage, and community during the American Revolutionary era. Through sisters Jessa and Martha Homan, audiences see how ordinary families in Boston are affected by war, shortages, and dishonest merchants who take advantage of difficult times. When one greedy shopkeeper hoards coffee and raises prices unfairly, the women of the town band together to take a stand. Inspired by real events and the famous acts of protest that shaped American history, the Boston Coffee Party highlights the strength of everyday people, especially women, who work together to defend justice, support their soldiers, and fight for liberty.
