Lower School Experiential Education

LOWER SCHOOL (K-5th)

Fall Adventure
Students participate in Fall Adventure for community-building activities that draw on classroom lessons and provide opportunities for grade-level classes to spend time together in different ways as they grow their relationships at the beginning of the academic year. Further, Fall Adventure provides the opportunity for students to expand their comfort zones while engaging in problem-solving and collaboration with classmates.

Colorado Expedition (COEX)
Through outdoor, place-based learning, K–5 students explore Colorado's geology, ecosystems, and human history — past, present, and future. Guided by this mission, Colorado Expedition (COEX) is an immersive, multi-week unit of study where classroom lessons directly inform outdoor discovery. Each grade engages with a unique theme to build curiosity, connections with cultures and places, and stewardship of the resources that shape our state. Far more than a single "week in the field," COEX brings academic concepts to life as grade-level classes travel locally and across the state to experience history and science firsthand. These experiences range from PreKindergarten students preparing in the classroom before exploring the CSS campus pond to study local wildlife alongside the Catamount Institute, to fifth graders camping at Mesa Verde National Park to examine its well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings.
