Art Therapy Comes in Many Forms

For our closing day, students presented individual projects showing what they had learned in our three weeks together. Some chose to present about one particular form of art therapy, while others presented a montage of various pieces they’d worked on over the ECS. Everyone agreed that the possibilities for finding artistic ways to deal with stress and even trauma seem almost endless. Some of these forms may be right in front of us, but we hadn’t realized the power they hold in helping us deal...

Our Therapies

Sadly, today was the second to last day of ECS. We worked on our group project presentations and individual presentations. We split into our group and polished our presentation. We spent the whole morning, 8 to 11:45, working on our presentations. People who finished their presentations, helped others on their job. Most of the people helped with designing and giving feedback on a poster. After we had lunch, we went to Profe Kunze’s room and gave our presentations. The first group was Mia,...

A Day of Reflection

We started off the day at 9:00 a.m. The last couple of weeks we have all been working so hard and learning so much that Profe and Ms. Miller gave us an extra hour of sleep. First, we all gathered in Ms. Miller’s room and went over some logistics. We organized who was writing what thank you letters and then had a good amount of time to get some work down. Then we met in our Job groups and completed some tasks to help us towards the end of our seminar. Snack, poster, photographers, and...

Manitou Springs!

Today was sadly one of the last days of this wonderful ECS, but it was surely a good one. Today we had a tour of art in Manitou Springs. We started off by having lunch at the Sunwater Spa. This was such a unique and wonderful place, and I really enjoyed listening to the speaker talk about the unique therapeutic services that they offer. Then we headed over to a mineral water spring. If you wanted to, you could taste the water that was produced by this natural spring. The water was very...

Marching Forward

As we reached the end of the second week of our ECS, we stayed on campus for our activities today. The first thing we did was watch a video on making a mask as therapy. After the video, we made our own mask to represent ourselves. The front of the mask was used to represent how other people see us. Then, the back of the mask represented how we saw ourselves as a person. Many students used bright colors to represent the front of the masks and used very dark colors such as dark blue or black to...

Snow Day Art

It’s always fun to find out when you wake up and there’s no school. Today we got to sleep in, hang out in the snow, and keep warm in our own houses. We watched the movie Coco today, in order to think about how music (or art) can lead us to embrace what makes us and our families unique.  In addition to a brief art project, we read about how Covid 19 has impacted access to culture and the fact that Art has been impacted in the pandemic.  Some people may have even been...

Using Words to Find Feelings

Here we are on Day 9 of The Artful Recovery ECS. We spent all of today doing on-campus activities. The day started out with painting using colors going from light to dark — either many colors or just one. Next, we got the opportunity to talk with Molly Wingate, founder of Poetry Heals, who spoke with us about poetry and how it can be used as a therapeutic tool. At the beginning of the Zoom meeting, she had us write about what we were thankful for. This part was really interesting because...

Films and Windmill Hikes as Therapy

During the second week of ECS, we have done a lot of off-campus activities today being the third day of our second week of ECS. Today we started on campus and talked to a filmmaker and writer, Mr. Ben Thompson. He was awesome and helped me learn a ton about all the things that go into a film. He showed us a film called Knick Knack, which is a film where there is a party going on and a snowman trying to escape his snow globe to get to a girl in the party. The snowman goes through a series of...

Movies and Dance! What Could Be Better?

As the second week of ECS rolled around, we have already had very eventful days. Yesterday we hit the town, but today we stayed at our cozy campus. In the morning, we listened to and watched some very informational presentations that we didn’t get to on Friday. They had fun videos that were really cool to see. For example Noah’s presentation on Art therapy for Veterans had a fascinating video of Veterans with PTSD making masks that expressed the way they felt. Later, we watched Inside Out, a...

Art is Everywhere

Today marks the first day of our second week of the Artful Recovery ECS. This morning, we either got a ride or drove down to downtown Colorado Springs to Acacia Park’s southwest side off of Bijou and Tejon. Once everyone arrived at the park, one way or another, around 10:00 a.m., we got started on a scavenger hunt looking for art around downtown. In this scavenger hunt, we were given hints about the art and had to find an art piece with that hint or description. We were divided into four...
