Power to the People ECS | A Day in Colorado Springs

On March 10th, the students of the Power to the People ECS looked at environmental issues by first talking with Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers about what he does as Mayor and asking questions about what he was going to do about specific problems, like legalized marijuana and how we are going to switch away from fossil fuels. Power to the People ECS | A Day in Denver

Early Monday morning, the Power to the People loaded up and headed to Denver for an exciting and undoubtedly educational adventure to meet with Denver Post journalist Bruce Finley and Colorado Governor Jared Polis. Power to the People ECS | Democratic and Republican Caucuses

On March 7, the students had the opportunity to observe either a Democratic or Republican caucus. The Democratic caucus took place at 2:00 p.m. at Fox Meadow middle school. In total, around 30 people participated in 12 precincts. The students’ objective was to observe a fundamental process of the American democracy: citizens gathering to choose their candidate for Senate. Power to the People ECS | Newspapers, City Council, and Public Radio

On Friday morning, the Power to the People ECS loaded up into the van to visit our city’s news media and municipal governmental institutions. Our first stop was at The Gazette where we were met by John Boogert (the managing editor). He gave us a quick briefing, and then proceeded to lead us to a meeting room. On Thursday, March 5th, the Power to the People students had their first in-school ECS experiences. The students participated in a Harkness-style discussion surrounding topics such as Political Polarization and how facts affect our opinion.   After an exciting first night in our wilderness cabin located near Walden, CO, the Power to the People ECS started another great day filled with snowshoeing, amazing views, and intense, competitive games. Power to the People ECS | Power Dynamics

The first day of the Power to the People ECS began with an immediate immersion into the innate power dynamics of society. The ECS group removed themselves from the busy, crowded world, filled with media and distractions, to study the power dynamics of people on a most basic level.
