Parents Association Committees for 2011-2012
New Family Picnic (Year Round)
Chair: Heather Lowe
Laura Nelson
Volunteers become ambassador families for families new to CSS. If you are interested in being paired up with a new family to provide a point of contact, familiar face, information on school activities and traditions as well as introducing them to other families, then this is your committee! Training and family matching are provided by the CSS Admission Office. This committee also plans and hosts the annual New Family Picnic.
Carnival (Coincides with Homecoming in September/October)
Chair: Amy Paschal
Heather Lowe and Donna Taylor
This not to be missed CSS community event involves hundreds of parent, student and faculty volunteers who set up, tear down, run booths, supervise older students running booths, work as token counters, distribute prizes, cook and serve in the food booth, provide fabulous baked goods and more. The CSSPA underwrites the cost of the carnival and all funds raised by class booths are given to school divisions to be spent on class needs. Carnival provides an opportunity for the entire CSS Community to enjoy a fun afternoon while socializing and raising money for classes. Funds distributed to divisions are used to offset the cost of classroom consumables and other needs (CS); Parties with Music and Walkabout (MS) and winter carnival, Prom, senior gift and clubs (US).
Faculty/Staff Appreciation (October & February)
Chair: Jennifer Richter
Co-Chair: Ruth Watts
The committee plans and hosts appreciation luncheons for faculty and staff members during fall and spring parent/teacher conferences. Volunteers help set up, decorate, serve beverages bus tables and clean up. Homemade desserts provided by volunteers are a main highlight of both luncheons. If baking is your thing (or you know of a great bakery) or you can create a beautiful fruit tray, check out this committee!
Fun Run (The kickoff to Homecoming Weekedend Activities – September/October)
Chair: Cheyenne Gapinski
Co-Chairs: Kristen Solo and Jennifer Richter
Don’t be left out, show your school spirit and order your student(s), and everyone in your family, this year’s cool t-shirt. Volunteers on this committee help arrange the student t-shirt design contest, order and distribute tees, seek advertising and sponsorships, obtain prizes, register runners, set the race course and cheer on the young runners during the race. Another not to be missed event, the Fun Run kicks off Carnival and Homecoming week activities and is a major fundraiser.

Garage Sale (April)
Chair: Donna Taylor
Co Chairs: Cheyenne Gapinski and Amy Paschal
Hundreds of volunteers help transform the field house into a mini-department store during the week prior to the sale by sorting donations, setting up displays and pricing merchandise. Lots of fun and it results in raising the majority of the proceeds CSSPA gifts to the school. Believe it or not, sorting through donated treasures is a great way to meet other parents. New this year--bar coded pricing! What will Donna come up with next?
Potluck Dinners (September – October)
Chair: Veronica Crim
Co-Chair: Jennifer Richter
One of our school’s most important “friend raising” venues, potluck dinners give CS, MS and US parents the opportunity to meet, welcome, and/or reconnect with parents of the other children in their child’s class. Volunteers host a class potluck dinner or lunch in their home for parents. The potluck usually lasts around 2 hours. The PAB will help with date selection, class lists, invitation preparation and provide guidance. The meal can be formal, casual, structured or not. Some hosts select a theme and everyone brings a related dish. Other hosts have a heavy appetizer or dessert evening with everyone bringing their favorite. Sometimes two or more families work together to plan and host the potluck. There have even been hosts providing the entire meal. Regardless of the menu, the purpose is to provide a venue where the only goal is for parents to meet and get to know one another. If connecting with other parents in your child’s class is important to you, please consider hosting a potluck dinner. Contact the committee chair to volunteer and if you’d like to have the potluck at a venue outside your home, please check with her first.
