Monday No School: MLK Day --
Tuesday Podcast work in computer lab. Your 20 pictures are due by Friday. Collect them on your personal thumbdrive. Organize them into folders for each of your kingdoms.

You also need 2 extra slides that you make on PowerPoint as title slides, one for each kingdom.

If you are still waiting to record, make sure that your script is clean and your are well-rehearsed!
Wednesday Podcast work in computer lab. What should you be doing each night during this week?
--Plan for your day in the lab tomorrow!

Thursday Podcast work in computer lab. See Wednesday's homework!

I am checking pictures tomorrow! Have all 20 pictures plus your 2 title slides ready in your project or on your thumbdrive.
Friday Podcast work in computer lab. If you are planning on doing the Kodiak Scholar live taping, your short introduction script is due to Mrs. Carpenter's email by Monday at 7:30 AM at the latest. You also need to email her the slide you want to be in the background. Do you want it to include your name (first name only) or your kingdom names? Then make a PowerPoint slide that includes these things. We will start allowing students to do the KS taping if/when their podcast is complete

Week of January 9
                               In Class                             Homework

Monday Peer edit first script Polish first script, start second script.
Tuesday In class work on second script Finish second script. It is due tomorrow.
Wednesday Peer edit second script

Introduce GarageBand
Polish your both scripts. Make sure that you have a CLEAN copy of your scripts to read into the microphone. No cross-outs, arrows, or red marks. It is too hard to ready fluently when you have to read a messy copy.
Thursday First day in the computer lab. We will rehearse and record. Start looking for pictures over the long weekend. You can save them on a thumbdrive, organized in a folder for each kingdom, to bring to school. If you save a picture, look for the biggest size possible so that it isn't all blurry when it is blown up on a screen. The best size is 600 x 600 or bigger.

Most of you still need to record your scripts. Keep practicing, polishing your script, and cleaning up your copy so that you are ready to really get to work next week.

Read "Measure in SI" on p, 156 in your science book. Study the table and memorize the prefixes. You will have a small quiz on them tomorrow!
Friday Quiz

Dimensional Analysis--Unit Conversion
It's like math class in science when we are working with measurements. Doing dimensional analysis takes some work, doesn't it? Well, there is an easier way to convert one unit to its equivalent measurement in another unit. Here is how:

Go to the Google search engine (www.google.com). Once you are in, type in the conversions that you want in the search bar (for example, to find out how many feet are in 25 miles, type "25 miles in feet") and press return. You will get an automatic answer!

For homework, do these conversions:
1. How many meters are in 6 kilometers (hint: type "6 kilometers in meters")
2. How many liters are in 12 gallons?
3. Convert 125 inches to meters.
4. When a cross-country runner runs a 10K (10 kilometer) race, how many miles is he or she running?
5. Swimmers regularly swim 6,000 meters in a workout. How many miles is that?

Record the problem you typed in and the answer you got from Google on a sheet of paper to turn in on Monday. Round your answers to the nearest tenths like we talked about in class.

Week of September 12

Tuesday Popcorn Lab: Experimental design Work on your Popcorn Lab Report Outline. Finish these sections by tomorrow:
  • Title
  • Purpose
  • Hypothesis
  • Materials
  • Independent Variable
  • Dependent Variable
  • Constants
  • Control
Wednesday Run the Popcorn Lab

Here are our results:
Number of Popped Kernels
Team          Freezer          Table
1                 197             196
2                 182              194
3                 191              193
4                 193              196

Finish any part of the outline that you did not complete in class, except the conclusion, which we will discuss in class tomorrow. This includes set-by-step procedures (start with counting out 200 kernels!) and observations. Include the results of both classes in your data table. Write some qualitative observations as well.
Thursday Discuss Popcorn Lab. Work on lab report drafts. If you are ready, begin to type your report into Google Docs using the Lab Report Template (remember first to save the template as a copy and then rename it with your first initial and last name and PL after it for "Popcorn Lab").
Friday Computer Lab for report writing. Finish typing your lab report this weekend. Your report is due by 8 AM Monday morning. Remember to SHARE it with me and allow me to edit your report.

Friday Observation vs. Inference

Get science books!
Because 6th graders have only two study halls per week while they are in the "Get It Together" study skills class, they will have fewer/shorter homework assignments during the first 8 weeks of school.

Over the weekend...cover your science book! You will earn homework points for this next Tuesday, so do it before then!
