Foundations of Language is a study in Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes. Through class discussions, translations, predictions and interpretations, students will acquire the skill of dissecting words and exploring the definition of each fragment in order to understand the meaning as a whole. Since Greek and Latin roots make up the majority of words in English and the other romance languages, this knowledge will enhance the ability to read, write, and speak. Understanding of concepts in science, math, and history will also be enhanced, as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills. Some rote memorization is required. This class will run for one semester and meet on Mondays/Tuesdays and Thursdays/Fridays in place of the study hall period.
Note cards: note cards should be made for each new lesson that is covered in class. Do not throw any note cards away, even if we are finished with that particular lesson. The format for the note cards should be as follows: the key word should be on one side of the note card. The other side should have the following information: language of origin; prefix/root and its meaning; definition(s) of key word; alternate parts of speech (pesky words!).
Please note: the homework policy differs slightly for this class due to the fact that it only meets twice per week. If a student is absent on the day that an assignment is due, that assignment is expected to be turned in on the FIRST day that the student returns to school. Each day that an assignment is late, 10% will be deducted.
