The Edible Classroom
The Edible Classroom, with Anne Flemke, is coming to The Colorado Springs School. Chef Anne is so
impressed with the garden that CSS Upper School prepared and planted, that she thought this was an ideal opportunity to compliment the garden with her Edible Classroom program. The Edible Classroom’s mission is to teach children the full cycle of food, from planting, harvesting, preparing, sharing, learning about nutrition, and finally, composting. The Edible Classroom program believes children who prepare food and take an active role in choosing ingredients, like herbs, vegetables, and fruits from the garden, are more likely to eat healthier foods.
Life’s a Picnic, and summer is the time for playing outside and having a picnic! Your chef will make fresh basil pesto with creamy goat cheese on home-baked French bread; a Mediterranean-inspired roasted eggplant spread with pita crisps, fresh herb yogurt dip with cut veggies, a sesame orzo salad with currants and apricots and, fresh baked coconut cookies with homemade raspberry ganache. We will be outside every day, enjoying our creations, playing fun games, and making summer crafts. On the last day of camp, we will have a garden party, where the chefs will make a few favorite recipes from the week. Get your summer whites ready, as we will be playing croquet! Each chef will bring home his/her own cutting board, a recipe book, and his/her very own cooking tool.

Borosilicate Glass Torchworking
Borosilicate glass is more complex, requires more heat, has more sophisticated and subtle colors but is also more forgiving and much better suited for sculpture-making than the softer soda-lime glass usually used in classes at CSS. We will spend the week working only with boro glasses, exploring some of the specialized effects, colors and objects that can only be made with this medium, such as remarkable marbles, birds, insects, foliage, and sea life. With practice, medium-to-large structures can be built up or constructed in boro glass and glassblowing effects achieved. Advanced students may attempt a small goblet or vessel. While previous torchworking experience is suggested, it is quite possible to pick this up as a novice. Cost includes all materials and supplies.

Summer Creative Writing Workshop
This course offers adults and teens alike many opportunities to explore imaginative, unique, creative writing in several genres. Using various instructional tools, including published texts, exercises, activities, and inspirational models, students practice their own creative expression through fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction reading and writing. Similar to the "real world" of publishing, students share their work with each other in a safe workshop environment, practice the steps of the writing process through revision, and select the pieces they feel are their best for possible publication. Summer is a perfect time to slow down, stir up those creative juices, and hone those writing skills we tend to leave dormant during vacation.
Date: June 27-July 1
Time: 8:00 a.m.- noon
Location: El Pomar Academic Center, Room 213
Grade: entering grades 9-12 and Adult
Cost: $195.00
Instructor: Amy Johnson-Smith

Arduino for All!
An Arduino is not an exotic armored rodent…it’s a small electronic circuit board with a microchip included that is transforming the world of DIY project-building. It is designed for the non-programming generalist to be able to explore the new field of “physical computing,” which is the fun and geeky world of making little computers do things, or control things, or turn things on and off, or make things move, or light up, or blink, or talk, or buzz, or wiggle or…. We will use our Arduinos to create a range of electronic gizmos, from blinking LEDs to small LCD screens, to motor controllers, to MP3 players, to collecting and logging data from remote sensors and then transmitting it over Ethernet to another computer (or Arduino). Starting with simple LED projects, we will begin to learn the basics of the “C” programming language that controls the Arduino, which is not as scary as it sounds! We will also make use of numerous libraries of pre-written code. Soldering skills are not required but can be included.
The fee includes your own Arduino board, an introductory kit, including textbook, breadboard, an Arduino prototyping shield, a wide range of jumper wires, LEDs, capacitors, resistors, transistors, switches, buttons, a motor or two, and other cool stuff – value over $100.
Date: June 27-July 1
Time: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Location: The Colorado Springs School, Carriage House
Grades: entering grades 7–12
Cost: $350
Instructor: J. Miller Adam
While Mr. Adam’s job title today is Photography Teacher, when he was in middle school, he squandered many hours designing cool things in his mind and trying to make them come true (an RC hovercraft, a personal submarine). Over the last few years, he has become quite obsessed with all things electronic, small and gadgety, and now seeks to find small electronic solutions to a wide range of challenges in his life. He is fascinated with and encouraged by the DIY/Maker trend that has been sweeping the country, and he enjoys exploring the many possibilities offered by the Arduino and its bretheren. Having learned how to make his own film, he really wants to design and build his own digital camera some day….
Watercolor Painting
This class is for beginning through intermediate level painters. Starting with color theory and basic palates of watercolor pigments, we will capture colors from the natural landscape by representing subjects as subtle as ripples in the pond, to majestic mountain views, to small close-up textures of rocks and colorful flowers. We review works by master painters, representing various styles, and at the end of the day, share in positive critique of our paintings. Students will have the unique opportunity to visit the International Watermedia Workshop (on the CSS campus at the same time as this course) to observe professionals developing their paintings and to get tips and feedback from the artists. Several watercolorists will also visit our class to provide one-on-one evaluation and support. Students can expect to make a number of color sketches, along with one or two larger paintings.

Instructor: Hans Wolfe
Mr. Wolfe has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years and honestly believes that Art is for everyone! Originally a heavy-handed opaque watercolorist using smooth illustration board, he now prefers thin, watered down pigments used sparingly on thick textural papers. His concepts of color were forever changed through the study of wavelengths of light in holography as well as learning to control colorful oxidation layers on metals while studying at The Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Wolfe teaches a wide variety of art subjects at CSS.
Summer Theater Camp
If you love to pretend and to express yourself dramatically, then you are invited to spend two weeks, this summer planning, promoting, and performing a play in a professional theater setting. Camp participants will spend nine days preparing to put on a play for their friends and relatives. The performance will take place on the evening of the final day of camp. The choice of play will depend upon the number of participants, their collective talents, interests, and ages.

Ms. Craig is currently an Upper-School English teacher at The Colorado Springs School, but has been teaching all ages since 1991. During her tenure at an independent school in Ohio, Ms. Craig indulged one of her greatest joys in life as a successful Middle-School Theater Director. Since that time, Ms. Craig has missed directing middle-school plays so much that she decided to create this summer camp opportunity. She hopes this will become an annual event.
Historic Inventions
Do you want to try chipping obsidian tools? How about blowing your own glass light bulbs and then powering them with homemade batteries? Can you make a fire with just sticks? Have you ever wanted to smelt metal from ore? What if we dig our own clay, make pottery and fire it in a kiln we build? Want to try out your own low-tech inventions? Yes, this is a hands-on, historic and creative invention class! We may even talk with a patent attorney.
Safety equipment is provided, and participants must wear non-synthetic clothing (cotton), long pants and closed-toe shoes (no sandals). Also, please bring your thinking cap!

Instructor: Hans Wolfe
Mr. Wolfe has always created and invented things: wind generators, solar collection devices, cannons, fountains, instruments, small watercraft, powered jumping shoes, and over the years, designed, built and operated dozens of metal casting furnaces. He enjoys sharing (and attempting) lost arts - things our ancestors accomplished regularly, but with which we have lost touch. Once, for the Deya Archeology Museum, he recreated an early copper-smelting furnace on the island of Majorca, Spain to test how pre-bronze-age inhabitants used the local mineral ores.

Instructors: Jody Welch and Hans Wolfe
Jody Welch has spent a lifetime creating art. She has explored many mediums over the years and found her passion in glass 15 years ago. Stained glass gave way to flameworked glass 5 years ago and continues to hold her interest. Due to a lack of hot glass studios in the area, Jody is mostly self-taught. Her work has been shown at several galleries in the state, and she has also had success with international sales. "My passion for art was reignited in the flame."
Hans Wolfe has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years and honestly believes that Art is for everyone! Known at times for creating incredibly fragile glass tool sculptures and various glass animal forms, he shows his art at Edge Gallery in Denver and places like Foothills Art Center and the Pikes Peak Center.
May the Test Prep Begin!
The Test Prep Workshop will provide test preparation for the SAT Reasoning Test, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), and the ACT. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a co-sponsor of the PSAT, recognizes students who achieve high scores in their junior year. PSAT scores give juniors a chance to qualify for the NMSC’s scholarship programs. Colleges also use PSAT scores to begin recruiting potential students. The ACT and the SAT Reasoning Test are college entrance examinations used in the college admission process. Both of these tests contain an essay portion. Although open to all 9th-12th graders, this intensive 5-day course has proven to be most helpful to those incoming sophomores and juniors who are unfamiliar with the different formats, sections, and expectations of the various tests. Each participant receives full instruction in the variations between the tests, repeated practice in all formats, skill review and refinement, and one-on-one counseling regarding performance and recommendations. Students will leave the workshop with increased confidence about the appropriate test(s) for their particular learning style and skills to refine during the school year. (Test-specific workshops are offered throughout the year just prior to each test administration.)
