Athletic Wrap-up 2010-2011

Upper School Girls’ Volleyball:
The varsity girls’ team continued their winning ways with an overall record of 14 wins and 9 losses. Third year head coach Kyong Lee, led the team to a second place finish in the BFL and a third place finish in Districts. Selected All-Conference were Kurstyn M. and Kaitlyn B., while Honorable Mention honors were awarded to Niki H. and Lilly L.

Middle School Girls’ Volleyball:
The Middle School “A” team also continued its winning ways under head coach Carla Davies, with a second place finish in League and a second place finish in the season ending BFL Tourney. The girls finished the season with a 10 win 3 loss record, their 10th winning season in a row.

Upper School Boys’ Soccer:
While competing in the toughest 3A League in Colorado (three teams finished in the Final Four in the State play-offs), the varsity boys played solid, competitive soccer all season. With only three seniors on the team and a very solid junior and freshman class, prospects for a winning season next year look very good. Juniors Ryan D. and Ian P. were chosen All-Conference. And senior Alex D. earned Honorable Mention honors.

Middle School Boys’ Soccer:
The Middle School boys played a very tough schedule this year garnering a 7 win 1 tie and 9 loss record. From the beginning of the season to the end, the boys showed great improvement in their skills and teamwork. Even in their losses, the second half of the season saw them playing very close, hard fought games. There is an excellent group of 8th graders joining the Upper School next year.

Upper School Cross-Country:
The cross-country team featured a full varsity squad for both boys and girls this year. With Caroline F. qualifying for State and earning All-Conference honors for the third year in a row, the girls had their strongest team in years. With five freshmen boys on the team and showing great improvement throughout the season, prospects for the next few years look excellent.

Middle School Cross-Country:
A strong group of girls’ cross-country runners highlighted the season. 8th grade runners Laura Jane D. and Morgan B. led the team with many top ten finishes. Some young 5th and 6th grade runners will be the leaders on next year’s team. CSS also hosted the second annual Kodiak Classic Middle School race with the girls’ finishing second overall.

Upper School Boys’ Golf:
The golf team was young and talented this year with a majority of the team being underclassmen. However, senior Ian C. led the team earning All-Conference honors and qualifying for the State Championships for the second time. Coach John Krause believes the next couple of years will reveal some top golf at CSS.

Upper School Boys’ Tennis:
Losing seven varsity players to graduation last year, the tennis team was very young. While remaining very competitive, the Kodiaks were building for next year’s season when 10 of the top 11 players will be returning including top singles’ players’ Jackson P., Ryan M. and Chance G.

Upper School Boys' Basketball:
Under first year head coach Myles Johnson, the varsity boys finished the regular season with a 9 win 10 loss record and finished one win short of qualifying for the regional play-offs. Drew E. was selected first team All-Conference and second team All-Area. Jay R. and Ian C. were All-Conference Honorable-Mention and All-Area Honorable Mention.

Upper School Girls' Basketball:
After losing four starting seniors to graduation, first year head coach Venita Ames and the varsity girls found themselves in a rebuilding season with an entirely new starting line-up including three freshmen. With all of the experience gained, next year’s team will be much improved. Freshman Kendra B. earned first team All-Conference, second team All-Area and Honorable-Mention All—State honors. Kaitlyn B. earned Honorable-Mention All-Conference and All-Area honors.

Middle School Boys’ Basketball:
Looking to build a solid Middle School program to feed into the Upper School, coach Myles focused on strong fundamentals. Although undersized, the boys were competitive the entire season as David C. and Slater S. led the team offensively, while Quinn A. and Garrett D. led the team defensively.

Middle School Girls’ Basketball:
With Coach Vicki Vaughan taking over the program, the girls experienced another excellent season with a 14 win 5 loss record. They finished second in league and second in the season ending BFL Tournament. Nataya S. and Clare H. led the team offensively and Laura Jane D. led the team defensively.

Middle School Boys’ Lacrosse:
With Coach Roger Tucker returning to the Middle School, this young team experienced a very competitive season. Going against bigger opponents was an every game challenge. Kurt W. led the team defensively and Tori J. led the team offensively.

Middle School Girls’ Soccer:
Under head coach Joseph Arnold, the girls completed another winning season with a 5 win 3 loss and 1 tie record. Clare H. led the team offensively, Gouya L. defensively and Nataya S. was the playmaker.

Upper School Girls’ Tennis:
Under first year head coach Brian Ford, the girls equaled last year’s record with 8 wins and 2 losses. Elli F. was the leading singles’ player and Niki H. and Anne S. was the leading doubles’ team. With many top players returning, next year’s outlook remains very optimistic.

Upper School Boys’ Lacrosse:
CSS again ran a COOP program with Fountain Valley. With Jackson P. and Ian P. serving as captains and both earning All-conference honors, along with three other juniors playing key roles on the varsity, the team finished another season with a winning record while playing against 4A and %A schools. CSS also had 7 freshmen on the JV team.

Upper School Girls’ Soccer:
Under head coach Amos White, the girls achieved the best girls’ soccer season in 15 years as they finished second in their conference and earned a berth in the 3A State play-offs. Earning All-Conference honors were Sara K., Sarah H., Paola L., Lisa M., and Meghan H. Honorable –Mention All-Conference selections were Wendy F. and Kim P.

Area Athletes
In the instance that CSS does not offer an Upper School sport, our students may elect to participate with another area high school. This year Danielle W. swam for Cheyenne Mountain High School. Finishing second in State in the 500 Free and again being selected First Team All-Area in girls’ swimming.

Annual Awards

Kodiak Award is awarded to those who play three CHSAA sanctioned sports per year for CSS all four years of high school; This years award winner was Kaitlyn B.
Kodiak Scholar Athlete is awarded to the senior who has played at least two sports per year at CSS since their sophomore year with the highest cumulative GPA. Kaitlyn B. was the award winner.

Athletic Wrap-up 2009-2010

Upper School Girls' Volleyball:
The varsity girls' team completed their seventh consecutive winning season with a 15 - 8 record. Second year head coach, Kyong Lee, led the team to a third place finish at Districts, narrowly missing qualifying for Regionals. Selected for All-Conference honors were Hannah J., Marissa Q., and Karly L. , while Honorable Mention accolades were awarded to Kurstyn M. Hannah J. also garnered an invitation to the All-State Games.

Middle School Girls' Volleyball:
The girls' team enjoyed the best MS volleyball season in a decade, which is not something easy to say, considering how successful the Kodiaks have been in volleyball. The girls accomplished this by winning the Black Forest League Championship and the BFL season-ending tournament. With second year head coach, Carla Davies, at the helm, the girls finished the regular season with a 14 - 1 record and were 17 -1 overall.

Upper School Boys' and Girls' Cross-Country:
With new head coach, Joseph Arnold, the varsity girls' cross- country team enjoyed the most depth and their best season in the past ten years. The highlight of the season was when Caroline F. qualified for State for the second consecutive year and earned All-conference honors. Connor F. was the lone runner for the boys. Next year should be an even better year with all of the girls returning and an excellent group of 8th grade boys and girls moving to the Upper School.

Middle School Boys' and Girls' Cross-Country:
Both the boys' and girls' teams enjoyed their best cross-country seasons ever. Under new head coach, Marianna Pereda, the girls consistently placed in the top three in all races. Greta S. led the way, placing first in every meet she ran, winning the first Kodiak Classic race at CSS, and winning the season-ending Tri-Peaks League race. The girls ended their season by finishing second at the Tri-Peaks League race for the second year in a row. The boys also enjoyed great success with Jax K., Matt W., and Jack B. earning several top ten finishes, highlighted by their first place finish at the Kodiak Classic where Jax K. took first place overall.

Upper School Boys' Soccer:
For Coach, Amos White, and the players, the highlight of a losing season was when the team still managed to qualify for the State play-offs for the third consecutive year. All-Conference honors went to Delovell E., Charles L., and Barron C., while Honorable Mention honors were awarded to Ryan D. Delovell E. was selected Second Team All-State and Barron C. received Honorable Mention All-State recognition.

Middle School Boys' Soccer:
The boys completed their eighth consecutive winning season, finishing with a 7 - 6 record, while competing against the top Middle School teams in Denver and Colorado Springs. Led on defense by Chris P. and offensive standout, Gavin G., the Kodiak games were all closely contested. Coach, Marco Lara, is passing on a large group of developing players to the Upper School.

Upper School Boys' Tennis:
The tennis team completed their sixth winning consecutive regular season with an 8 - 2 loss record. The team finished third at regionals, one point out of second, and Josh S. qualified for State at #2 singles. Seth G. earned All-Area honors. With second-year coach, Brian Ford, directing the team, new young freshmen will be critical for continued success.

Upper School Boys' Golf:
The golf team was very young and talented this year. Playing against 4A and 5A schools, the Kodiaks were very competitive. Ian C. played the #1 position on the team and also earned All-Conference honors. The golf team graduated only one senior this year, and with a new group of freshmen, Coach, John Krause looks forward to a team with great depth.

Upper School Boys' Basketball:
The varsity boys achieved the third best season ever under head coach, Dave Cortez, with an overall 19 and 3 record. The boys were League Champions for the third consecutive year, and they achieved their seventh consecutive winning season, before ending their season by losing a very close game in the Regional semi-finals. All-Conference recognition went to Delovell E., Andre B., and Chris D. Ian C. earned an All-Conference honorable mention. The Denver Post named All-State First Team honors to Delovell and The Gazette selected him as All-Area Player of the Year. Andre B. made All-Area Second Team and Chris D. and Ian C. earned All-Area honorable mention recognition.

Upper School Girls' Basketball:
Under the leadership of nine-year head coach, Vicki Vaughan, the girls enjoyed a very competitive season highlighted by qualifying for the Regional Tournament for the first time in school history. They finished the regular season with a 9 win, 10 loss record. All-Conference honors went to Karly L., and Andy A. Marissa Q. earned Honorable Mention. Karly earned First Team All-Area with Honorable Mention accolades going to Marissa and Monica F. Karly also earned an All-State Honorable Mention by the Denver Post.

Middle School Boys' Basketball:
After starting slowly, the boys became very competitive the second half of the year. With Coach, Will O'Hearn, at the helm, all the games were close as the team finished with 3 wins and 11 losses. The Kodiaks were led offensively by Hunter G. and defensively by Chris P. CSS has a talented group of 6th and 7th grade boys filling next year's 7th and 8th grade team, and a strong, vastly improved group moving into the Upper School.

Middle School Girls' Basketball:
The girls achieved the best Middle School season in the past 10 years at CSS. Coach, Quatisha Bailey, led the team from last place three years ago to second place in League and second in the season-ending Black Forest League tournament. Their overall record was an impressive 16 wins and 3 losses. Kendra B. was the leading scorer, and Megan H. led the team defensively.

Upper School Boys' Lacrosse:
It was decided this year to do a cooperative venture with Fountain Valley School, and CSS provided eight talented young men to play on their team. They finished the season with 10 wins and 5 losses. Ian P., Mike V., and Josh S. earned First Team All-Conference Honors, and Jackson P., was named Second Team All-Conference. Ian P. earned recognition from The Gazette as an All-Area First Team athlete and Mike V. scored an Honorable Mention.

Middle School Boys' Lacrosse:
CSS had a strong group of 8th grade boys this year with a total of 23 boys out for lacrosse. This is an increase of seven boys from last year. Playing tough, close, and exciting games throughout the season under head coach, Paul Ritch, the boys improved dramatically. Drew L. led the team offensively, and Jack B. was the defensive stalwart.

Upper School Girls' Soccer:
Last season, CSS ran a cooperative program with Vanguard. This year we were back to our own program with 14 girls on the team. Sara K. earned First Team All-Conference honors and Marissa Q. was selected All-Conference Honorable Mention. Head coach, Amos White, remarked that CSS has a great group of juniors moving up and looks forward to having an influx of talent in 9th grade next year.

Middle School Girls' Soccer:
CSS had a great group of 28 girls out for soccer. They are, overall, the most talented group we have had at CSS. The "A" team finished the season with a 10 win, 1 loss record, with the lone loss by one goal in the last minute of the game. Coaches, Marco Lara and Joseph Arnold, remarked that this team had the most talent and depth of any they have coached at CSS. Leading the team offensively were Greta S., Megan H., and Clair H. Leading the team defensively were Kendra B, and Nataya S.

Upper School Girls' Tennis:
Under second-year coach, Anita Lyons, CSS had 22 girls out for tennis this year (three were seniors), the greatest number in the last 10 years. The girls enjoyed their best season in years with a 9 and 2 regular season, the second winning season in a row for the girls. With the growing number of players and depth of talent on the team, next year looks promising. Leading the team at #1 singles was Masha P.

5th/6th Girls' Volleyball, Girls' Basketball, and Boys' Basketball:
CSS continues to compete in the Cheyenne Mountain Elementary League in these sports. Our students gain invaluable experience as we field three teams in each sport, with each player getting much playing time.

Area Athletes:
In the instance that CSS does not offer an Upper School sport, our students may elect to participate with another area high school. We have several Upper School students playing CHSAA sports at other schools: Kendall M. played hockey at Cheyenne Mountain High School., Nels J. and Landes R. played baseball at Cheyenne Mountain., Danielle W. swam for Cheyenne Mountain., and Caroline S. swam for Lewis Palmer High School. Danielle W. finished second in State in the 500 Free and was selected All-Area First Team in swimming.
