Physical Education Curriculum
I. Philosophy
The Physical Education program at the Colorado Springs School centers on the students as individuals. Each student will be exposed to a variety of activities and sports that will cover the realms of individual, dual and team participation. The information that will be passed on to the students will enable them to make a more informed decision concerning lifetime activities, fitness, and health knowledge.
The Physical Education program also encourages every student to be a team player and learn cooperation skills during each unit. Students will gain a clear and healthier view of themselves, and will improve their skills, enabling them to be lifelong participants in a wide variety of sports.
II. Performance Goals and Objectives
The goals and performance objectives of the Physical Education Department are as follows:
- Develop sportsmanship through a variety of activities and sports.
- Develop teamwork through a variety of activities and sports.
- Develop appropriate skills and techniques in a variety of sports and activities.
- Develop a knowledge base in a variety of activities and sports.
- Acquire the knowledge of fitness for a healthier lifestyle.
- Develop the ability to problem solve and self-assess during after activity.
- Develop a sense of self-awareness, personal space and boundaries.
- Develop and maintain a suitable level of physical fitness.
- Acquire needed safety skills and habits.
- Accomplish the above goals we have the following performance objectives.
- Develop a level of physical fitness to improve and maintain the quality of life.
- Identify and demonstrate physical and health related fitness components.
- Learn and apply the principles of safety when participating in physical activities.
- Develop personal skills necessary for participation in games, sports, group activities and lifetime activities while developing leadership skills, sportsmanship, fair play and respect for others.
- Acquire gross motor and fine motor skills and develop perceptual awareness skills by using developmentally appropriate patterns.
- Acquire fundamental skills related to play, tumbling, sports and leisure by using developmentally appropriate motor patterns.
- Develop fundamental skills required to participate in individual, dual and team activities that will lead into a lifetime of activity and fitness.
III. Instructional Strategies
The instructional strategies employed by all grades to accomplish these goals are as follows:
- Traditional Strategies

- Direct student practice in the area of study

- Create a game given a few pieces of equipment and then share ideas

To assure that our department and students are meeting these goals, the following assessment techniques are applied:
