Proud Preview of 2015-2016

The arrival of NFL training camps and corn and chiles in the local markets are sure signs that the start of the school year is fast approaching. Like anyone with a true passion for what they do, the faculty and staff at CSS have enjoyed summer but we are excited to get back to our work with students. This fall, there is much to be excited about. Throughout the course of the 2014-2015 school year, the faculty and administration engaged in a series of inter and intra divisional conversations that...

New Hires & New Year

Dear CSS Community, Great schools are defined by the quality of their teachers and the intentionality of their programs. CSS has much to be proud of in both areas. It has been a pleasure for me to reflect on the recent accomplishments of our students, the work of our faculty, and our stellar programs. Kudos to the Upper School on preparing our students for their rigorous course work, their many Advance Placement tests, their final exams, and the special events and ceremonies that mark the...

Head of School's Charge to the Class of 2015

I have thought a great deal about what to say to you all today. I was hoping that I could simply appropriate/steal the speech from my own commencement exercises on Tuesday in New York but…… it was too lame to take credit for. Plus, that would have been a bad example. I do feel a special connection with your class and am rather fond of you. Your sincere welcome this fall meant the world to me and even though some of you call me A-A-ron, this is not the worst thing that a head of school...

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

As I mentioned in my state of the school letter and address this winter, beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, the CSS Upper School will implement a Bring Your Own Device Program. Like a 1:1 technology integration program, students will be expected to have access to an electronic device (tablet with a keyboard, chromebook, netbook, or full laptop computer) in each of their classes on a daily basis. Unlike a 1:1 program, students will have the choice to use the type(s) of devices they already...

Digital Portfolios

What did you learn in school today? This question was frequently posed to me when I was a young student. In full disclosure, I never liked answering this question, but perhaps that’s because I floundered at answering it. Traditionally, most students, and even most educational institutions, have answered this question by referencing the traditional rituals and accouterments of school – classes, essays, tests, grades, and textbooks. Most schools looking at their own internal goals and...

The Value of a CSS Education: Announcing Tuition and Programs for 2015-2016

As I mentioned in my recent State of the School presentation (Video - 25 minutes), The Colorado Springs School is supported by a committed and motivated group of parents who invest in a CSS education for their child because they know that educational opportunities that promote engagement awaken the skills and habits students need for success. As we announce new tuition levels for the 2015-2016 school year, I want to assure you that we are committed to increasing the value proposition of a...

Thankful for Kodiak Pride: Announcing a New Spring Sport

Earlier this fall, I outlined some of the fine and performing arts programs and events that make CSS different from other schools and a truly special place for students. Brava to Ms. Sandy Bray and company for a fine Revue and Middle School Musical Theatre Showcase this fall. A most immediate applause should also be extended to the cast and crew of Don’t Drink the Water in Upper School on the winter play performed just before Thanksgiving Break. What a show! Next up, Middle...

Faces and Phases of Giving

At this point in the school year, many thanks are in order. The fall colors are here and the many programs of CSS are in full swing. The students and their teachers and coaches have been doing their best in the classrooms, on the stage, the court and the field for many weeks now. The well-measured combination of support and high expectations makes CSS a place where students invent new ideas and invest in themselves and others. It is important to remember that the excellent environment of The...

Recap of Installation and 2014 Founders' Day Ceremony

A sincere thank you to everyone for their well wishes on my Installation as The Colorado Springs School’s 9th Head of School. It was an absolute pleasure to share the stage with our Founders’ Day honorees Master Jay Kuk Lee ‘99, Ms. Lesley S. King ‘77 and Mrs. Ava Heinrichsdorff, a thirty-year veteran English teacher of CSS. For those of you who were unable to attend the Installation and Founders’ Day Ceremony, we wanted to make available a video with highlights of...

Building Upon Tradition and Success in the Arts

Many things set a CSS education apart from other options. Our performing and fine arts programs are near the top of this list. Building on the success of our artist-in-residence program, this year’s art program has CSS students working with professional artists who practice their craft at the local, regional, and even national levels. The school’s commitment to providing authentic learning experiences from those who know the arts best is in line with our mission of bringing our...
