Full Steam Ahead welcomes middle school students to campus for hands-on summer camp

June 20, 2019
Since 2012, The Colorado Springs School has delivered an engaging and enriching middle school summer program that fosters intellectual curiosity and inspires academic achievement through creative explorations in science, the arts, and technology. Recruited through Peak Education, students gain acceptance into the three-week program.
Students study the brain during Full Steam Ahead summer camp
One curriculum track dubbed “The Brain Matters” focuses on the most powerful organ in the human body— the brain. Through both anatomical and psychological investigations, students gain knowledge about keeping the brain healthy and improving cognitive skills. The second course focuses on “Innovation and Discovery.” and uses problem-solving techniques, collaboration, and critical thinking to solve challenges. This course also explores how technology has improved the human experience. From dissecting brains to programming robots, students gain immersion in topics and studies not typically afforded to students during the course of a regular school year. Master teachers and high school mentors deliver the program while also coordinating thematic and relevant field trips. Traveling beyond the classrooms of campus exposes students to outdoor adventures, museums, and college resources in the region. Students also choose electives to explore new interests and hobbies, like photography, flying machines, cooking, crafts, painting, games, and sports.

“At the root of this enrichment program is the desire to show students joy in learning. Through hands-on engagement, on- and off-campus explorations, excellent teaching, and supportive mentorship, we aim to bring excitement to each day’s learning experiences,” said Amy Johnson-Smith, Director of the Full Steam Ahead summer program. Ms. Johnson-Smith is a veteran English teacher and chair of the English department at CSS.

The Full Steam Ahead summer camp is rooted in the foundation and philosophy of experiential education and project-based learning, which The Colorado Springs School has been delivering to its students for more than 50 years.
The program receives generous funding from the Carl G. Bjorkman Foundation. All Full Steam Ahead students attend the program for free. Meals and transportation are also built into the program.
A Closing Ceremony will occur on Thursday, June 27, 2019, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Louisa Performing Arts Center on campus. Parents and funders are invited to attend and celebrate with the program participants.
