Bonaire Scuba ECS | Diving and Ocean-Inspired Art

After waking up to the beautiful Bonfire ocean this morning, we ate a delicious breakfast and traveled to one of the more famous dive spots on the island, Hilma Hooker. This is a very unique dive due to a massive drug ship that sank there long ago. When we arrived, everyone geared up and entered the water through a point that wasn’t too treacherous. Then we swam out to the wreck, and began to descend. Immediately problems began to arise. First, a few divers were having trouble...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Cleaning Up Trash by the Beach

In a blink of an eye, half of this trip has passed. Today we got a practical assignment — a beach cleaning activity by the sea. In the morning, we came to the island by boat. We all wore hoodies from ECS and gloves of the same color, and we looked very unified. First, a lady who was the former director of STINAPA Bonaire, a non-profit commissioned by the government to protect the two National Parks at Bonaire, lectured us about what plants they introduced on the Klein Bonaire to retain...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Giant Stride Into Wednesday

This morning we splashed into our first dive at Oil Slick dive spot. Getting into the ocean was easy, but the surf was very aggressive, making it difficult on the way out. At least half of the students had difficulty coming out of the water. Regardless, the dive was beautiful and we spotted a sea turtle. After lunch we all got ready for our exciting boat dive. Students had been looking forward to this specific dive primarily just for the fact we got to jump off the boat. A giant stride...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Rocky Water

Waking up Tuesday morning brought a mixture of feelings: annoyance at needing to wake up so early after a long day previously but also excitement because today was our first day diving off Buddy Reef as certified divers. After loading copious amounts of gear into the vans, we headed off towards the towering piles of salt from local salt mines to the Invisibles shore dive. Waves crashed around us as we set up our gear, anxiety perforating the group. Not only have we never done a shore dive, we’...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Splashing into SCUBA Skills

Today we splashed into completing two more of the four dives required to become SCUBA certified. These dives are not only important as our first few dives, but they also are dives where we practiced and became comfortable for crucial skills we will use for the rest of our SCUBA diving careers. Despite practicing these skills previously at Underwater Connections in Colorado Springs in August, where we took our first SCUBA lessons, I was still nervous for one particular skill. This...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | New Certification

This morning we jumped in the water to complete our last certification dive. This particular dive was fairly simple as we only had three skills to do. When we first splashed, we headed out over the reef and Mr. Johnson set up the CESA line. CESA is a controlled emergency swimming ascent. This skill would be used if you run out of air and don’t know where your buddy is. While we all know to never lose sight of our buddy, it is still important for us to know what to do if we do. The other two...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Feeling salty?

Today was our first full day in Bonaire. After a filling breakfast, we had orientation to Buddy Dive. An employee showed us around and told us how to use certain pieces of equipment that would allow us to get ready to dive and stay safe. He also told us about some of the places where they were trying to grow coral that they could use to keep the reef healthy in their “Reef Renewal” project. Before we can start diving in the reef, we need to first do several dives to test important...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Refreshing Experiences

After two long overnight flights from Denver to Miami and Miami to Denver, we are all ecstatic to have finally arrived! Not only was this my first overnight flight, but it was also my first flight without a source of technology. I’ll be honest; I wasn’t anxious to leave my phone at home, but it was very refreshing. Instead of staring at my phone the entire time, I could people watch, talk to friends, reflect, and think about my goals for the trip. I don’t think I’ve ever been this...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | Some Refreshing Water

After two days of completing classwork and creating projects, it was almost time to prepare for the departure to Bonaire. However, a SCUBA refresher course to re-establish safety procedures and make sure all important information was retained was necessary. Without this, there would be a much greater chance of someone forgetting something during the trip. To our surprise, once we arrived, a refresher pop-quiz was placed in front of us! Obviously, no studying was done prior to this, so it was...

Bonaire Scuba ECS | The Big and the Small

During the first two days of our ECS, we basically did two things: Figuring out how Earth came to be the way it is right now and putting “salty shrimp” (AKA brine shrimp) into salty water. So firstly, the Earth. It wasn’t much of a shock to hear that human history took place in only a fairly small part of the Earth’s 4.6 billion years of life, but it still brought the feeling of being “small” to my mind. Intelligent creatures like us have only existed for so long. Before that, were billions...
