Scandinavia ECS | From Construction to Economics, in Stockholm

Though we have returned home safe and sound, we thought it would be wrong to not post a quick blog about the last few days of our trip. On Sunday we awoke to a lovely breakfast then headed off for a quick breeze through Skansen, a local outdoor museum about Swedish life in the relatively distant past. It was a chilly day, but the breakneck pace that Mrs. Hedden and Dr. Young call “brisk” was just enough exercise to keep everyone nice and warm. We explored a house and the...

Scandinavia ECS | Learning at LBS in Lund

After sitting on the train, in which we sped by farms scattered on the vast Swedish countryside, we have arrived in Stockholm, where more adventure is to come. Over the last two days, through a combination of sitting in on classes and exploring Malmö and Lund, we immersed ourselves in Swedish culture. My favorite place we have visited is Kulturen, an outdoor museum made up of houses from different time periods. Instead of seeing items in a glass case, we walked into and around the houses that...

Scandinavia ECS | Homestay Adventures in Lund

We’ve been extremely fortunate in that a multitude of families have welcomed us into their lives for a homestay experience. We spend our days here in Lund at the LBS school attending classes, learning about the education system, and gaining an overall better perspective of school in Sweden, then we travel home in the evenings with our host siblings. For all of us this includes either a walk, a bike ride, a trip on the bus or train, or even a combination of these ways of transportation to...

Scandinavia ECS | Bridge to Lund and Host Families

Students are happy and excited in their homestays tonight! We had a great meet and greet at the school and then each student took the train or bus with our respective families to our homes. We start school on Monday! On our last day in Copenhagen, we experienced the city on the canals. The day was as bright as the buildings of Nyhavn. Locals and travelers alike lined the walls of the canal to enjoy the sun. The buildings themselves were bright enough to compensate for days with gray weather...

Scandinavia ECS | Be My Eyes in Copenhagen

Hej fra København! Hi from Copenhagen! Today was very eventful and involved a lot walking (10.7 miles!!). In the morning we took a tour around Copenhagen and got to learn more about its history. We learned that there have been five city halls, the reason for which being that the first four were burned down. This seemed to be a recurring feature because several other buildings have been burned down due to fires in the past. We also learned about Hans Christian Anderson who moved to...

Scandinavia ECS | From Colorado Springs to Copenhagen

We are sending this first blog post from our hotel in Copenhagen! While we may be slightly jet-lagged, we are all ecstatic to further explore this beautiful city and see what the next two weeks in Scandinavia have to offer! The Life in Scandinavia ECS started its first day with a bang! We split into five small groups and played quiz question games with Dr. Young in order to have a better feel for some general Swedish and Danish facts. Although all sixteen of us have done some kind of...

Scandinavia | Course Description

Life in Scandinavia: Shaping a society through the role of government Essential Question: How can a society strive to become more healthy, balance private and public services, reduce social ills, and find a path that improves the lives and well being of its citizens? How can we measure the success and happiness of a civilization? Striving to be a highly-developed, healthy society requires balancing public services with the workings of private markets, being economically competitive,...
